Self Love

Journey to Self Love

Today is Valentines Day. A special day in the calendar’s year set aside to celebrate love. I’m a lover of valentines day, how beautiful is it to set aside a day to celebrate love. Today is traditional full of hope in many hearts that they will receive a sign that they are loved. Sometimes though, we need to look internally and find love for ourselves, some self love, so that ultimately we can wholeheartedly love others.

In the past I have always looked to others to feel loved. To validate me as who I am. To make me happy. I’ve lived the path of “when x gives me a cuddle then I will feel loved” “when x has the time to spend with me then I will know I am important”…. I have waited. I have hoped. I have put my life on hold, waiting to feel important, waiting for someone else to meet my own needs. I have pushed my own needs, hopes, dreams aside because I was waiting for someone else to validate me as being worthy, as being loveable. By doing so, I brought upon myself so much pain and heartache. The person I was hoping to show me love, felt they could never meet my needs. And they couldn’t. Not because they are a bad person but ultimately because I didn’t love myself, respect or feel worthy in myself and because I didn’t feel it for myself nothing anyone could have done could make me feel these things. (Wow that was really hard to admit to myself but freeing at the same time.)

This lesson I am learning the hard way. Through heartache and pain, I am having to pick myself up, look internally and start seeing myself through loving eyes. It is a journey of exploring and discovering who I truely am. What do I enjoy doing. What lights a fire within me. What brings joy into my life. It’s a slow journey and that is ok. Instead of waiting for someone else to show up and make me fill loved, I am finding ways to fill up my own love cup. Have I got it all worked out – hell no! But I’m learning and to me that is the most important thing. Along the way I hope to to teach and inspire my beautiful daughters to do the same so that they can learn from me, what I believe is such an important lesson of life.

As busy people, and especially if you have kids, we find it hard to find the time meet our own needs. We often push our own needs aside to look after everyone else. We are exhausted and it feels like just one more thing we have to do. But ultimately if we don’t look after ourselves, if we don’t fill our own cups up then we feel burnt out and unable to find any happiness in life. We need to look after ourselves, show love, kindness, and compassion to ourselves to that we can show up for all those we love in life and enjoy all that life has to offer.

What does self love mean to me, what fills my cup up, here is just some of what I’ve discovered for myself that I hope might inspire you

A beautiful candlelit bath with epson salts and lavender oil

Being outside in the fresh air and just breathing, even if it’s just for a couple of minutes

Riding my bike

Meditating

Reiki

Walks on the Beach with my feet in the water

Day 27

Day 27

Today is a big day. The first day of High School for Elizabeth. She was awake this morning at 5am with a mixture of nerves and excitement. She was anxious about not knowing where to go and getting lost but looking forward being with her friends again. At the end of the school day, she came home reporting of having a wonderful first day.

Day 26

It’s Australia Day today, and after a big weekend of competing, it was also rest day. School goes back tomorrow so it’s time to do those final things to get ready for the start of the new school year. We went and got new school shoes and then while Charlotte enjoyed some special time with Daddy, Elizabeth and I tackled the final of the book covering so that they were all ready for tomorrow. Sleep well my girls, tomorrow is a big day x

Day 25

It’s not often that you see many photo’s of me on here 🙂 But during day 2 of our cross fit competition, my daughter took this photo of me doing a 22kg clean and jerk. The kids had lots of fun watching and cheering us on while taking happy snaps on our iPhones. Charlotte even did a little video for Mick. The quality not the best but I love it all the same. Nice to exist in photo’s too sometimes 😉

Day 24

Day 24

Both my husband and I are regular cross fitters. My husband is rather strong and constantly pushes himself further and further. He loves competiting in competitions when he gets the chance. Late last year, he asked me to join him in a competition on the Gold Coast – Personal Best Test. At first I thought he just wanted to compete in the mens and me in the ladies but then he said no, as a team – just for fun. I couldn’t say no. So today was day 1 of the competition – 3 main events, 5 side events. It was tough and pushed us but most of all it was fun, working out together, spending the day together, encouraging and supporting each other. We did things that I have never done – swung a sledgehammer, carried a keg, pushed sled and my most proud moment was a personal best on my overhead squat by 9kgs by doing 2 overhead squats at 25kg.

Day 23

There is nothing like a 60th birthday to bring everyone together and then to capture that moment when they are smiling is pretty special. A wonderful night spent with my Father in law and Mother in law celebrating together as a family. Happy 60th Birthday Ian xo

Day 22

Day 22

Until December, Elizabeth and Charlotte had been sharing a room. They had bunk beds that also had desks on each end for them. When Elizabeth moved into her own room, she no longer had a desk to work on. Last night Daddy surprised Elizabeth by bringing home a new desk that she had found and had been wanting. She was so excited that as soon as she could this morning she was putting her new desk together. Both Elizabeth and Charlotte worked together to do it, with no help required. Elizabeth just loves building like this.

Day 21

Backdrop stands can be used for so many different things. Today we set up the backdrop stand and Charlotte decided to practice some of her plies. I know she can’t wait to get back to ballet next week.

Day 20

Day 20

She is my sensitive soul. Most people wouldn’t see this side of her. They see the actively little girl that doesn’t stop. They see her talking constantly. Always looking for attention.

Lately though she has seemed a little lost and out of sorts. It’s as though she doesn’t quiet know where she fits. She sees her sister and wants to be just like her, able to do what she can do and when she can’t it upsets her. I am trying hard to teacher her, that she doesn’t need to compete, to stop comparing herself to everyone else and be happy with who she is. As I sit here writing this, I have had a light bulb moment – I see in her a reflection of myself. I too am struggling/working to overcome this.

We constantly see on Social Media how wonderful people’s lives are, images of perfect families, perfect relationships, perfect kids, perfect lives, perfect food flood our feeds and we wonder why are lives aren’t perfect like everyone else’s. We begin to question “what is wrong with me that my life can’t be like that” We constantly search for the missing ingredient – when I get more money, when I get a new job, when I loose more weight, when I get fitter, when I do this course, when I, when I, when I ….. then I’ll be happy like everyone else.

What I am learning though is that where I am is perfect for me! I am letting go of the old story of feeling unworthy of good things. I am learning to love me, for who I am. I am finding Gratitude in the everyday moments. And I’m stopping myself from comparing to others and being happy being me. It’s not easy but in doing so, I’m happier and enjoying life. I’m finding who I really am and I hope to teach my girls these now to help them on their journey.

Day 19

Day 19

There was no iPod’s to play with today. Technology free day. I love days like this, seeing the kids use their imagination, playing happily together. Today they found the good old UNO cards. It’s amazing how the old games never seem to go out of fashion. There were a few tears over the cards as Charlotte doesn’t like to loose but overall they both had lots of fun.
